What you can do with a laptop and digital camera
Choosing a digital camera is the most important decision for any budding photographer these days but there is an awful lot more that can be done at home to images after they have been captured than was ever possible before. In addition to that it is possible to see the images instantly on your camera’s own screen and as soon as you return home they can be viewed on your computer. If you want to see what they might look like blown up then a high definition TV can be used to display them on a larger screen. Although the resolution of any screen is not going to match the number of pixels that the latest cameras utilise, the higher resolution models will give a much better view of the details in the pictures that you take. For working on images you will need a fairly powerful computer that has the processor speed and memory to make manipulating large media files an easy task. There are many models on the market and a high-end notebook is worth investing in for the serious amateur or professional photographer. It is best to investigate the software that is on the market yourself as it is beyond the scope of this article. Suffice to say you will find applications that can transform your images in a huge variety of ways and allow you to touch them up until they are perfect. A good eye is still necessary to compose a decent photograph of course.
Storing your images
If you happen to own a DVD player the chances are that it will be able to accept discs with still images on and you can use your player to look through your library of pictures. Nobody knows quite how long DVDs will last, owing to the fact that they have only been around for a relatively short time so it is a good idea to make several copies of important photographs and keep them on a variety of media. When you are out taking pictures, something like a netbook is fine for transferring images to if your camera’s memory becomes full but you will need something a little more powerful to work on the pictures with. These small machines are also great for uploading pictures to websites so your friends and family can see your holiday snapshots before you get home. If you have a desktop machine with a large hard drive then images can be stored on there too. Moving pictures take up a lot of space so if you use a digital camcorder while you are on holiday or as part of your hobby then buying an external drive on which to store the results is worth thinking about. Some models do come with enough internal memory on which to store several hours of high resolution footage but over time you will accumulate an awful lot of material. Organising your library of work is just as important as the media which you choose to store it on.
Improving your image
Once you have taken and stored your photographs, something like a multimedia laptop can be used to make minor or major changes to them, as you see fit. Instead of having to take them to a laboratory to be developed we can see and work on digital images at home with a decent computer and some creativity. When working on the colours it is important to think about the final medium that the picture will be displayed on. Tones can vary a lot from a monitor to paper for example. To view them using a television LCD models will produce the best image of your photographs if you want to hold a traditional slideshow for your friends. The quality will vary from model to model of course so if you are thinking of buying a new one then be sure to check the specifications out before making your purchase. Most people will naturally use their set for much more than just looking at photographs so if you are planning on connecting it up to other appliances such as a DVD recorder then check that it has an HDMI socket so that high resolution images can be transmitted from one machine to the other. This is also handy if you have a camera that has this type of interface. Although choosing your camera is a personal affair, shopping for a new television ought to involve the opinions of everybody in the household, presuming they are all going to be using it.
Where to find advice
People who are new to photography are often confused by the choice of equipment. A laptop and an internet connection will get you started on your journey of discovery if digital photography is an unfamiliar subject. There is a lot of written material that will help to guide you in the right direction at first and many examples of other photographers’ work online. To look at the latter you will need a machine with a good-sized display and the components to render images in their best light. If your computer’s screen is not all that big then it is possible to plug it into an HD TV in many cases. If you already own one then this should be no problem but if not then you will have to decide whether it is worth spending the money at the moment or not. If your PC has a large monitor and your family do not watch a lot of television then it may be that it is not necessary to purchase one yet. On the other hand, CRT models have had their day really so at the very least a decent LCD TV could be considered. There are sometimes interesting programmes with advice for amateur photographers and these are sure to be more enjoyable when viewed on a modern set. If you are already familiar with the technological terminology surrounding the world of digital photography then learning about the latest home entertainment equipment will be easy for you to pick up.
